MARILYN

When I get back from classes for the day, I find a white envelope on our dormitory door. In loopy cursive are our names: Marilyn Bayard and Lilith Valentine. My stomach flip-flops as I tear the envelope open.

Marilyn Bayard

Lilith Valentine

You are cordially invited to the Warrior Center on Thursday, August 25th at 8:00 pm. Wear comfortable clothing.

Sincerely,

Headmaster Merryweather

The summons is written in beautiful calligraphy on thick, pure white card stock. I hate every word of it. It takes all that I have in me not to throw up as I leave the invitation on Lilith’s desk. It sticks out like a sore thumb among her clothes and shoes. Despite having a closet for her items, she lets them pile up on top of books and papers that we may never see again. I’ve never seen her study or do homework. We don’t have any classes together; I wonder if hers don’t assign after-class practice and essays.

Theoretically, I don’t have a problem with the Warrior Center. I just thought that I’d have a little longer before I wound up there. Perhaps I might get a chance to sneak a peek at someone else mid-fight, or I’d hear about what was expected of me. I wouldn’t be the first person going in with no knowledge or understanding of what I’m about to face.

The dinner bell tolls and three sharp chimes echo off the buildings. I look at the watch on my wrist and realize that I spent more time with Professor Estes than I thought. It is six pm and the sun looks like it’s about to start fading from the sky. Just as quickly as I entered my room, I leave, carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders.

The hallways are empty this evening. Either students are already at the dining hall or they’re holed up in their rooms. The first week has ended and so has the busy work our professors assigned us during those first few days. Now we’re enveloped in studies, trying to prove to a handful of teachers that we aren’t worthless. The next three months will determine what classes we take for the rest of our time at Blackwood. By Christmas, I’ll know exactly what my focus will be. Assuming I live that long. I’m not convinced I’ll survive the rest of the year. Between all the people who hate me, the Headmaster that no doubt wants me out of here, and the Blackwood Five, it’ll be a miracle if I make it to New Year’s Eve.

I wonder if we get to know our opponents for the Warrior Center ahead of time. I haven’t asked Lilith much about it. For a few days at least, I thought it was all one big joke. Nobody ever spoke about the fights, not even the professors. But I guess they’d have to be speaking to me to tell me what to expect.

“Well, well, well, look who we have here.” His voice triggers the fight-or-flight instincts in me. I don’t even have to look up to know that I’ve run straight into Vale.
